Our Gallery at River Studios
Our gallery at River Studios.
2019 marked Andrew’s 40th anniversary as a professional artist. It was also the 18th season for DeVries Fine Art International, his gallery in Lenox. Very few could have foreseen the changes that awaited us in 2020.
These words are from Andrew. “I have come to the same conclusion that some of the Berkshire cultural institutions have. It is in the best interests for our client’s safety during the Covid 19 crisis that we take a hiatus from exhibiting in Lenox this year.”
DeVries Fine Art International has relocated to River Studios in Middlefield, MA during this time. For those of you who have visited during Open Studio you realize just what a special experience this is. The studio is brimming with creativity and this is where the sculptures and paintings are born! Andrew welcomes visits with just a call ahead (413) 238-7755 or email. Please do not use our gallery phone number as it is a cell phone, there is no cell phone service at the studio.
DeVries Fine Art International Inc. was founded in 2002 as a venture to exhibit Andrew's different series of sculptures that include dance, figurative, abstract and wall reliefs. The paintings feature figurative works from live models and dance themes which are completed from his sketches at various dance studios. In 2018 a new series of bold ink and watercolor paintings was begun that concentrates on costumed dancers.
The gallery director is Patricia A. Purdy ( who is also Andrew's wife). Patricia holds a degree in fashion and has over 20 years of expertise in picture frame design. Patricia and Andrew are celebrating their 19th year of the gallery, a well-loved destination for both visitors to the Berkshires and year round natives.
Andrew began showing his sculptures in the Berkshires in 1989, first at the Clark Whitney Gallery in Lenox owned by Ruth Kochta. In 1994 he joined the Lenox Gallery of Fine Art as an original member of that cooperative gallery. In 1996 he conducted a week long program on the grounds of the Chesterwood Museum in Stockbridge, casting an original life size bronze sculpture titled Joie de Vivre. The following year he opened an independent gallery at that museum which he operated during his artist residencies there from 1997-2003.
Upon his departure from Chesterwood, Andrew devoted his energies to exhibiting his sculptures and pastels through his own gallery in Lenox. He expanded his bronze casting demonstrations to Ventfort Hall, Gilded Age Museum and Mansion in 2004 and 2005. He has lectured at different museums, colleges and schools to share his knowledge and passion for his art and the bronze process.
Andrew is creating a sculpture trail of bronze sculptures on the pastoral property of River Studio in Middlefield, MA. Twenty of his sculptures will be displayed through meadows and treed knolls that blend nature’s splendor. Part of the trail follows the middle branch of the Westfield River that adds to the pleasure of wandering along the path. It is a safe and relaxing place for an hour it is a pleasurably saunter in the countryside!
We invite you to visit our gallery at River Studios for a refreshing friendly experience with the personal touch of Andrew and his wife Patricia. It is an unique blending of art, nature and the power of creativity. We are any day open by appointment. Please check our Upcoming Events .
