Description
The Rising is one of my most personal, and profound sculptural works in bronze. As with all the finest depictions of the human form, a spiritual undertone lies close to the surface.
As you can see in the photo; the body of a man rises up from a spiral and has pushed through a perforated disc. The figure itself is gouged and in places the viewer sees inside the bronze casting itself. The arms hang to the side with muscles tensed. The right hand is clenched, the left hand open; signifying both a holding on and at the same time letting go of existence from our human flesh.
The head is thrown backward in a final resignation with eyes closed. From the bare skull shoots upwards still, a single flash of polished bronze. Is it a flame? A bolt of lightning? – or is it his soul, his spirit? That is up to the viewer to decide.
The patina of the bronze shows transparent light blues, greens and violets. It will be attached to a black granite base. The dimensions are 40 inches in height by 22 inches width and 22 inches depth which includes the stone base. There will only be two castings in this edition.
