The Sculpture Walking Trail
River Studios Sculpture Walking Trail
When I first settled in this magical river valley in the Berkshires I thought, “Wouldn’t this landscape be the perfect location for an outdoor sculpture trail.” However, little did I know it would take thirty-five years and a pandemic to bring it to life.
The Sculpture Trail is now a dream come for you to experience!
We are now celebrating our fifth season, and much has been improved since that first year. The season begins on May 16th with regular open hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11am to 4pm. However we do welcome guests on other days with a call ahead (413) 238-7755.
Our Fall and Winter schedule begins October 20th at which time the gallery and Sculpture Trail will be open by appointment only, again by calling us a couple days in advance (413)-238-7755 to schedule your visit.
Your arrival at River Studios
The barn studio has a tall granite pillar, a red sign and a parking sign indicating the area. You will also notice the first two sculptures here as you drive in.
The Barn Studio is where our gallery DeVries Fine Art International resides.
Inside you'll discover indoor sculptures on beautiful marble or wood bases, along with framed vibrant pastel paintings, for your home. Visitors are quite amazed when they first walk into our gallery to find what treasures are inside. The barn studio is where art becomes real with an atmosphere that no other gallery has.
I finish the bronze castings in the barn studio; there are sculptures in different stages of being welding, chased and readied for their patinas, so you'll see how that I do indeed create and finish all the work here. Only a handful of sculptors in this country complete their own works, most send that part out to other foundries to cast and finish.
Location of the Sculpture Trail
Yes, I admit River Studios is not the easiest to find but for those of you who love art and nature, along with adventure, the Sculpture Trail is for you!
Here is a map with directions and Google Maps directions are reliable. Some other GPS programs have led people in very odd ways. I do recommend that you print ours out just in case. Cell phone reception can be spotty (or nonexistent) in the hilltowns. If you do get lost, find a clear signal and call us: (413)-238-7755.
What you’ll find on the Sculpture Trail
There are now 40 up to life size sculptures on the trail and as many poems by various artists all set on a half-mile of the 15 acre property. Each year there will be others added.
On the Sculpture Trail you’ll find dancers, musicians, jesters, as well as abstract, and figurative sculptures. They are placed in three shady groves and along the meadow’s back hedge. The path follows the middle branch of the pristine Westfield River, and there are benches where one can sit, and take it all in. We supply you with a map from our gallery.
The trail exists on unspoiled land that has been untouched for over 75 years. In the spring, summer and fall you will find wildflowers, butterflies, dragonflies and different bird species. You will feel the wind in your hair and hear the sound of the river.
Many have told us it seems like "paradise" here and you'll find that to be true as well.
For those of you who would like to explore the gallery and Sculpture Trail at a different time please call us a couple days in advance at (413)-238-7755 to schedule your visit. We do graciously accept donations to help maintain the Sculpture Trail.
PLEASE NOTE: The studios are handicap accessible; however the trail is not at this time. We do graciously accept donations to help maintain the Sculpture Trail.
There is a clean porta potty for your convience.
Walking the Sculpture Trail
A leisurely walk takes about 30 minutes; however, it’s really up to you to decide how long you’d like to enjoy your time here.
Our goal is to make this a pollinator heaven. The sculpture trail has a plentiful number bees, butterflies, and dragonflies, though there may be other pesky insects. We provide a natural repellent bug spray at the barn studio.
We allow guests to bring their dog along, and we ask that they be leashed when on the property. Your dog too should be protected from ticks, and you should always check them after a walk here. I highly recommend walking shoes or sneakers as footwear.
Please take all the photographs you would like, but please mention my name as the artist and the Sculpture Trail should you post them on media platforms. We appreciate you spreading the word about the trail, and rating us on TripAdvisor or Google Business is also helpful.
The modeling and casting studio
These studios are at the end of the Sculpture Walking Trail. For those of you who would like to see the modeling and casting studios please let us know when you first call. These studios are normally closed to the public.
There are 4 ticketed Open Studios* for Saturdays; May 24th, June 14th, August 30th and October 11th. An Open Studio is a unique experience where you’ll witness the birth of new sculptures as Andrew pours molten bronze into waiting molds. We’ll sojourn the paths of the trail together and end the special afternoon with a celebratory gallery reception with wine, refreshments and light seasonal goodies.
