This Man who Flies

I created the smaller version of This Man who Flies, a bronze male dance sculpture, in the year 2000. The sculpture was seen that year in an exhibition by a Canadian art collector who commissioned this larger version. I cast and finished the larger This Man who Flies in 2001. The crate was designed and built here at the studios then the sculpture was shipped to its new home in Canada.

Many of the larger works are commissioned from a smaller version. An agreement is written stating the final size, price along with other details with an edition that is agreed upon. In the case of This Man who Flies the edition was twelve. The collector or institution commissioning a sculpture always receives the first in the edition.

This Man who Flies has been one of the most admired of my bronze dance sculptures. It depicts a dancer in a courageous giant leap of faith as if he is assured to be triumphant over whatever might hold him back. Another in the edition was selected by Ted and Jacqueline Rosky for their memorial stone at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. In this setting, This Man who Flies sculpture gives a feeling of a spirit set free from the bonds of this earth.

I have installed the ninth in the edition on the Sculpture Trail here at my studios. Come see this and all the works at DeVries Fine Art International. Call us at (413) 238-7755 or email
